Excellent article. I think it's important to reflect on why we choose to study such unpleasant topics, it helps us keep sight of the humanity of the subjects and avoid becoming sensational.

We agree, many of our friends don't quite get this project. We do not always get the best reactions, but that is also understandable. Another possible issue is that it sometimes really quite difficult to read or learn about what happened--which confuses some people even more (i.e. why do you do that when it is emotionally challenging).

Interesting and unpleasant can partly overlap. Unpleasant topics often provide interesting insight into history though.

I agree that ongoing reflection is important as is guarding their humanity.

Thank you for reading, commenting, engaging, and encouraging.

How interesting to read about your journey. When I read your work or Jason Frowley's or Sophie Mitchell's, I always wonder why you chose to focus your research on these topics. Now I know! You're doing an excellent job, IMO.

Hi Meredith,

This is very kind of you. It is strange to write for a wide audience. We thought that some would be curious to know more about our journey and how we got to write and read about this admittedly bizarre topics. Thank you.
